Several members of the Labour Party (LP) in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a development that has further shaken the opposition party’s grassroots structure.

The defectors were seen publicly tearing their Labour Party membership cards as they announced their decision to join the ADC, signaling a complete break from their former political platform.

The mass defection comes shortly after the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, officially joined the ADC in Enugu State alongside several prominent party figures. Political observers say Obi’s move has triggered a wave of realignments across different states, particularly among his loyal supporters.

Speaking during the defection event, some of the former LP members in Ojo LG said their decision was influenced by recent developments within the party and their belief that the ADC now offers a more credible platform to pursue their political aspirations and reforms.

“This is about following a vision we believe in,” one of the defectors said, adding that Peter Obi’s decision to align with the ADC gave them confidence in the party’s direction.

The ADC leadership in the area welcomed the new members, describing their defection as a sign of growing acceptance and momentum ahead of future elections.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party is yet to officially react to the defection in Ojo Local Government, as concerns continue to mount over the party’s stability following the exit of key figures.

The latest development underscores the shifting political landscape within Nigeria’s opposition space, with analysts predicting more defections in the coming weeks as parties reposition ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
