APM Urges Tinubu Government to Account for Fuel Subsidy Savings

The Allied People's Movement (APM) has called on the Federal Government to provide a comprehensive account of the funds generated from the removal of the petrol subsidy since May 2023, urging the administration to disclose how the savings have been utilised amid continued economic challenges facing Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the opposition party said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should publish a detailed and independently verifiable report on the revenue realised from the subsidy removal and the projects financed with the proceeds.

President Tinubu, during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, announced the removal of the long-standing petrol subsidy with the declaration that "subsidy is gone." The policy led to a sharp increase in fuel prices, triggering higher transportation costs and a rise in the prices of goods and services nationwide.

Since then, the Federal Government has maintained that the savings from the subsidy removal have been channelled into infrastructure development, social intervention programmes, and other initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.

However, the APM argued that the government has yet to provide sufficient details to support those claims.

According to the party, Nigerians deserve to know the total amount saved since the subsidy was removed, the specific projects funded with the proceeds, their locations, and the measurable impact of the expenditures.

The party expressed concern over the country's rising cost of living, worsening poverty, and declining purchasing power, stating that many citizens continue to face severe economic hardship despite the government's assertion that the subsidy savings are being invested in critical sectors.

"The vague claims by the APC government that the proceeds are being invested in critical sectors without real figures and specific projects or programmes are completely unacceptable and cannot substitute for transparency and accountability," the statement said.

The APM further alleged that the country continues to grapple with significant infrastructure deficits and called on the government to demonstrate greater openness in managing public funds.
The party maintained that while it supports economic reforms capable of promoting national development, the success of such policies should be measured by their impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

It therefore urged the Tinubu administration to publish a comprehensive report detailing the total subsidy savings since May 2023, expenditures made from the funds, beneficiaries of government interventions, and the outcomes achieved.

According to the APM, greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources are essential to strengthening public confidence in the government's economic reforms.
