The Allied People's Movement (APM) has defended its presidential candidate and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, over his call for a United Nations-backed investigation into the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, accusing leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of reacting with "panic" to the proposal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the opposition party described the criticism of Makinde's position by some APC leaders, including senior government officials and lawmakers, as unwarranted and suspicious.

According to the APM, only those with concerns about the outcome of an independent investigation would oppose efforts to establish the full facts surrounding the kidnapping.

The party maintained that Governor Makinde's call for international involvement was intended to promote transparency, accountability and public confidence in the investigation rather than undermine Nigeria's sovereignty.

It argued that the scale and circumstances of the abduction warranted an independent review that would complement ongoing domestic investigations and ensure that all those responsible are identified and 
brought to justice. "The governor's position is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability. It is about uncovering the truth and strengthening public confidence in the investigation, not about diminishing Nigeria's sovereignty," the party stated.

The APM further said that an independent investigation would guarantee that anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation, social status or position, would be held accountable under the law.

Responding to claims by some APC leaders that the proposal amounted to an affront to Nigeria's sovereignty, the party argued that international cooperation in addressing terrorism and other security challenges is already an established practice of the Federal Government.

The opposition party noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has repeatedly sought international support in Nigeria's fight against terrorism, including during his address to the United Nations General Assembly and engagements with officials of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to the APM, these examples demonstrate that seeking international collaboration on security matters is neither unusual nor inconsistent with Nigeria's national interest.

The party questioned why some APC leaders were strongly opposed to the governor's proposal if they had nothing to fear from an independent investigation.

It also claimed that the reactions from some government officials had raised public concerns and renewed questions about the circumstances surrounding the abduction.

The APM further referenced past allegations made by a former APC leader concerning the alleged importation of foreign mercenaries ahead of the 2015 general elections, arguing that such issues underscore the need for transparent investigations into matters affecting national security.

The party said prominent government officials, including former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, should support efforts to establish the truth surrounding the incident rather than criticise the governor's call for an international investigation.

Reaffirming its support for Governor Makinde, the APM said it remains committed to promoting truth, accountability and justice in matters relating to the safety and security of Nigerians.

The party also commended the country's security agencies for securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers, describing the operation as a demonstration of professionalism and dedication.

It urged security personnel to sustain ongoing efforts to protect lives and property across the country, while insisting that uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the Oyo school abduction remains essential to strengthening national security, improving public confidence and preventing similar incidents in the future.
