The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has called on the Delta State Government to urgently upgrade the Kwale Township Stadium to meet standards required for top-tier football competitions, including the Nigeria Premier Football League.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the association said the current state of the stadium falls short of the infrastructure and facility requirements needed to host professional league matches, thereby limiting sporting opportunities for youths in the area.

HURPA noted that Kwale, headquarters of Ndokwa West Local Government Area, has the potential to become a major sporting hub if the stadium is properly developed and equipped.

“The upgrade of Kwale Township Stadium is not just about football; it is about youth development, economic growth, and community engagement,” the statement read.

According to the group, improving the stadium to meet modern standards would open up the region to increased sporting activities, including league matches, tournaments, and talent scouting programs. This, it said, would provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities and pursue professional careers.

HURPA further emphasized that sports development is closely linked to human rights, particularly the right to development, youth empowerment, and access to opportunities.

The association stressed that a standard stadium would attract investors, sports clubs, and fans to the area, thereby boosting local businesses such as transportation, hospitality, and petty trading.

“Beyond entertainment, sports is a serious economic driver. Upgrading the Kwale Township Stadium will create jobs, stimulate commerce, and improve the overall economy of the region,” the group added.

Residents and stakeholders have also expressed support for the initiative, noting that the absence of standard sporting facilities has long hindered the growth of sports in the community.

HURPA urged the administration of Sheriff Oborevwori to prioritize the project as part of its broader development agenda, particularly in the area of youth engagement and grassroots sports development.

The association maintained that with the right investment and political will, Kwale could emerge as a key destination for sports in Delta State.

As calls for inclusive development continue, stakeholders insist that upgrading critical infrastructure such as the Kwale Township Stadium remains essential to unlocking the full potential of the region.
