Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could seek a third term in office if he remains politically active and "God gives him long life."

Lawal made the assertion during an interview, where he expressed concerns about the credibility of Nigeria's electoral process and the conduct of political parties during elections.

According to the former SGF, elections in the country are no longer free, fair, or credible, alleging that electoral outcomes are often predetermined before votes are cast.

He argued that while Nigerians are encouraged to participate in elections, the results are allegedly manipulated before being announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"They would allow you to go to polling units pretending that INEC would do some bojuboju and announce the result that has already been handed over to them. I think that's the end," Lawal said.

He also criticized political parties over the conduct of their primary elections, alleging that most parties manipulate their internal selection processes.

According to him, disputes arising from party primaries remain unresolved because many aspirants believe the processes were neither transparent nor credible.

"They can deceive themselves that they are campaigning. Every political party rigged its primaries. Up till now they are still fighting because nobody can beat their chest and say they conducted free and fair primaries," he stated.

Lawal further expressed concern about public confidence in elections, suggesting that many Nigerians have become disillusioned with the electoral process.

He argued that election-related disputes have increasingly shifted from the ballot box to the courts, where legal battles often determine the final outcome.

Commenting on President Tinubu's political future, Lawal claimed that the President could seek a third term in office if circumstances permit.

"Bola Tinubu will go for a third term if God gives him the long life to do it," he said.
Nigeria's 1999 Constitution, however, limits a president to a maximum of two four-year terms in office.
