Senator Ned Nwoko has stated that peace and stability will return to the South-East region of Nigeria if the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is released.

Speaking live on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, the senator, who is also a major advocate for the creation of Anioma State, argued that persistent imbalances and injustices within Nigeria’s federal structure have fueled agitation among the Igbo people.

He noted that the South-East remains the only geo-political zone in the country with five states, compared to six in other regions and even seven in the North-West. According to him, this inequity has deepened the feeling of marginalisation among the Igbo.

“As a way to restore peace and order in the South-East, I strongly recommend that Nnamdi Kanu should be released from incarceration and that Anioma State be created,” Nwoko said. “These steps are viable means of correcting the long-standing injustices against the Igbo.”

The Delta North senator emphasised that the continued detention of Kanu has contributed significantly to the unrest in the region and that dialogue, inclusion, and justice are essential for national unity.

He maintained that the creation of Anioma State would not only balance the structure of the federation but also serve as a unifying step toward addressing the grievances of the South-East people.

Senator Nwoko’s call comes amid renewed discussions on constitutional review and state creation, with the National Assembly Joint Committee recently approving the creation of one additional state for the South-East to achieve parity with other regions.
