The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a fresh nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour agreements and resolve crises in Nigeria’s universities.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, speaking at the University of Jos, rejected the government’s proposed Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), calling it a “poison chalice.” He insisted that lecturers need improved wages through a renegotiated agreement, not loans.

The union lamented government’s delay in acting on the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, despite the submission of the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed Report in February 2025. It also condemned the unchecked establishment of universities, which it said lack basic facilities and staff.

ASUU’s National Executive Council resolved to wait for the outcome of the government’s August 28 meeting before deciding on strike action. Meanwhile, the union plans to hold rallies across campuses next week as a warning signal.
