Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has revealed that all his children are schooling within Nigeria, a decision that distinguishes him from his counterparts across the country.

Speaking during an engagement, the Governor disclosed that three of his children are in schools within Ebonyi State, while two are in Enugu. According to him, the highest school fee he pays is ₦35,000, a figure that shocked many of his colleagues at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

“When I told them, they were surprised and even felt sober,” Nwifuru said. “Some commissioners in my government pay as much as ₦2 million per term for their children, but I cannot imagine myself paying over ₦5 million per term for mine. Where will I get such money to continue after my temporary tenure as Governor? I don’t want to develop high blood pressure at a time I should be resting.”

The Governor emphasized the need for collective efforts to reposition Nigeria’s education sector to reduce the drive for studying abroad. He stated that his administration would take the lead in Ebonyi State by addressing deficiencies in the local education system.

“We must bring back confidence in our schools. I will ensure that the transformation starts here in Ebonyi. Our children should not need to travel abroad to get quality education,” he declared.

Governor Nwifuru’s remarks have sparked discussions nationwide on the sustainability of extravagant spending on education by public officials and the urgent reforms needed to make Nigerian schools more competitive.
