ADC Hails Court Judgment Affirming David Mark's Leadership

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the court judgment affirming former Senate President David Mark as the party's duly recognised leader, describing the ruling as a victory for democracy and an end to what it termed attempts at judicial manipulation.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the judgment reaffirmed its long-standing position that leadership issues within a political party are internal matters and are not justiciable under the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to Abdullahi, the emergence of the current ADC leadership under David Mark was conducted in line with the party's constitution and relevant laws.
He said the ruling should bring to an end what the party described as unnecessary distractions and legal challenges aimed at destabilising the opposition.

"While we view the ruling as yet another victory for multiparty democracy in Nigeria, we hope this judgment will bring to an end the unnecessary distractions and attempts at judicial manipulation by those determined to weaken the opposition and impose a one-party system on the country," the statement said.

The party, however, maintained that it would remain vigilant despite the court victory, alleging that anti-democratic forces were still pursuing efforts capable of undermining Nigeria's democratic process.
The ADC also commended the presiding judge for what it described as a courageous decision in upholding justice. It particularly welcomed the court's decision to award costs against the plaintiff and his legal representatives, expressing hope that the sanctions would discourage what it called frivolous litigation in the future.

Abdullahi added that, amid the country's economic and security challenges, the party's focus remains on providing Nigerians with credible policy alternatives and strengthening democratic governance.
He noted that with rising insecurity, increasing cost of living, unemployment and declining economic opportunities confronting many Nigerians, the ADC believes its responsibility as a major opposition party is to offer practical solutions rather than be distracted by internal legal disputes.
