Delta Govt Bans Illegal Levies in Secondary Schools, Orders Refunds

Asaba — Parents and students across Delta State have received major relief following the decision of the State Government to ban all illegal levies in public secondary schools and order the immediate refund of unauthorized fees within 72 hours.

The directive was issued by the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education in line with the administration’s MORE Agenda, aimed at easing the financial burden on families and promoting transparency in the education sector.

According to the Ministry, only government-approved examination fees are permitted. The approved fees include ₦1,100 for government-sponsored candidates sitting for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), ₦4,850 for public school repeaters, and ₦5,450 for private school candidates.

For senior secondary examinations, the Ministry approved ₦31,400 for public school candidates writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and ₦28,400 for private school candidates. The Ministry added that fees for the National Examinations Council (NECO) will be announced in due course.

The Ministry warned principals and school officials that any amount collected beyond the approved fees is illegal and must be refunded immediately to students and parents within the stipulated 72-hour window.
It stressed that the State Government has zero tolerance for extortion and unauthorized charges, noting that monitoring teams have been deployed across secondary schools in the state to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

The Ministry further cautioned that school administrators or staff found violating the order will face appropriate disciplinary action, as the government remains committed to protecting parents and students from exploitation.

The move has been widely welcomed by parents and education stakeholders, who described it as a timely intervention to restore confidence and accountability in the public school system.
