Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has commissioned multiple landmark projects at Southern Delta University, Ozoro, during the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to human capital development and educational advancement in Delta State.

The commissioned projects include a fully furnished Faculty of Science Laboratory complex housing eight laboratories, ten Engineering Workshops, newly constructed male and female hostels, and a Faculty of Medical Sciences complex — all delivered by the Delta State Government.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori reiterated that his administration remains resolute in strengthening tertiary education infrastructure to meet global standards. He emphasized that investment in education is central to sustainable development and aligns with his administration’s MORE Agenda.

In a further boost to the institution, the Governor approved additional hostels specifically for medical students, construction of a Faculty of Law complex, establishment of a computer-based testing (CBT) centre, perimeter fencing of the university campus, procurement of critical academic equipment, and provision of a modern ambulance to enhance healthcare training and emergency response within the university community.

The convocation ceremony was also marked by recognition of academic excellence. The overall best graduating student was awarded automatic employment alongside a ₦5 million cash reward, while other first-class graduates received ₦1 million each. The gesture, according to the Governor, is aimed at encouraging academic distinction and rewarding hard work among students.

Stakeholders described the development as a historic milestone for Southern Delta University, noting that the new facilities will significantly improve learning, research, and student welfare.

The event attracted government officials, academic leaders, traditional rulers, parents, and students who commended the state government for its continued support to the institution.

With the commissioning of these projects and approval of additional infrastructure, Southern Delta University is poised for accelerated growth as it strengthens its role in producing skilled professionals for Delta State and beyond.
