The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has raised serious concerns over what it described as the growing cases of unlawful arrests, illegal detention, harassment, and police brutality across Nigeria, calling on the Federal Government and security authorities to urgently embark on meaningful police reforms.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the rights advocacy organization condemned the continuous abuse of power by some operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that many Nigerians, particularly young people, traders, motorists, and residents in local communities, have become victims of intimidation, extortion, torture, and unlawful detention without proper investigation or court orders.

HURPA stated that despite several public outcries and past promises of reform following the nationwide #EndSARS protests, many citizens still experience violations of their fundamental human rights in the hands of some security operatives.

According to the association, arbitrary arrests and prolonged detention without access to legal representation remain a major threat to democracy, justice, and public trust in law enforcement agencies.

The organization said the abuse of citizens by officers who are expected to protect lives and property undermines the rule of law and weakens confidence in the nation’s justice system.

HURPA further stressed that police brutality has continued to create fear among ordinary Nigerians, especially in communities where residents often complain of illegal raids, unlawful stop-and-search operations, and extortion at checkpoints.

The group called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen internal disciplinary mechanisms and ensure that officers found guilty of misconduct are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The association also urged the National Assembly to review existing policing laws and introduce stricter accountability measures capable of protecting citizens from abuse of authority.

HURPA recommended the establishment of independent monitoring bodies to investigate complaints against security personnel and provide justice for victims of unlawful detention and brutality.

The organization equally called for improved training of police officers in the areas of human rights, community policing, conflict resolution, and ethical conduct.

“Security agencies must understand that respecting human rights is not a weakness but a constitutional obligation. Nigerians deserve protection, dignity, and justice under the law,” the statement noted.

HURPA appealed to citizens to continue speaking out against injustice through lawful means while urging civil society organizations, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to support campaigns aimed at reforming the policing system in Nigeria.

The group maintained that genuine police reform remains essential for national peace, security, and the protection of democratic values.
