President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to intensify efforts to end gas flaring and transform wasted gas resources into economic benefits for Nigerians.
Tinubu made the call on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when he received the NLNG Board, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Adeleye Falade, at the State House.
The President said the company’s priorities should extend beyond generating revenue from international markets to ensuring greater domestic utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant gas resources.
“My major concern is the domestic utilisation, where you must be able to take out the flaring and convert potential environmental liability to what could be strategically and economically beneficial to the consumers in the country,” Tinubu said.
He commended NLNG for improving its operational capacity and assured the company that the Federal Government would provide incentives capable of supporting further growth and expansion.
Tinubu also emphasised the importance of developing domestic energy capacity and pricing mechanisms that would make energy more affordable and accessible to ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking earlier, Falade disclosed that NLNG had generated more than $150 billion since its establishment, while its shareholders, including the Nigerian government, had received approximately $47 billion in dividends. The Federal Government holds a 49 per cent stake in the company.
According to him, NLNG had previously operated at about 60 per cent capacity because inadequate crude oil production restricted operations to four of its six available production trains.
He said the increase in crude oil production had enabled the company to raise operations to five trains, with further improvements expected.
Falade also disclosed that NLNG was preparing to inaugurate Train Seven, a development expected to increase the company’s production capacity by 35 per cent. He added that the company currently accounts for about five per cent of the global LNG market.
The NLNG chief executive further revealed that all of the company’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, is currently supplied to the domestic market.
He also informed the President that the Bonny-Bodo Road and Bridge project, financed by NLNG, had been completed and was awaiting official commissioning.
The meeting was attended by representatives of TotalEnergies, Nigeria Agip Exploration and other senior NLNG officials.
Government officials present included the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, Yasmin Mohammed.
