Abuja, Nigeria – August 20, 2025 — Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has applauded Nigeria’s security agencies for their recent strides in combating terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings across the country. In a public statement released on Tuesday, Obi described the developments as a “remarkable feat” and a critical step toward restoring peace and stability in Nigeria.
Obi praised the courage and professionalism of the country’s military and security personnel, many of whom he noted operate under extremely difficult conditions.
“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have shown courage, often under very difficult conditions. Their sacrifices remind us that Nigeria can—and must—be safe for all its citizens,” Obi stated.
“I salute their professionalism and urge that they be better equipped, trained, and motivated to sustain these gains.”
While acknowledging the successes, the former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for continued vigilance and accountability in the fight against insecurity. He warned against the dangers of a justice system that allows arrested terrorists and criminals to return to society without facing consequences.
“Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability,” he said. “Justice must take its full course so that impunity is not encouraged.”
Obi also highlighted the link between national security and development, noting that sustainable growth cannot occur without peace and safety.
“Security is the foundation of every meaningful development. A secure Nigeria is possible, and together we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.”
The message concluded with Obi’s signature call to action and vision for the country’s future: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
Obi's remarks come amid increased military operations in parts of northern Nigeria, where the armed forces have reportedly neutralized several terrorist cells and rescued hundreds of abducted civilians. His statement reinforces the growing call for strategic investment in the nation’s security architecture and a holistic approach to tackling the root causes of violence and instability.
