Abuja, Nigeria — The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has called on Nigerians to firmly reject any drift toward a one-party system, warning that such a development poses a serious threat to democracy, accountability, and national development.

In a statement released on Saturday, HURPA emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic strength lies in its political diversity and the healthy competition among parties. The association noted that attempts—whether subtle or overt—to weaken opposition parties or concentrate power within a single dominant party must be resisted by all well-meaning citizens.

“Nigeria’s democracy thrives on pluralism,” the statement read. “A one-party system, whether by design or default, undermines the principles of representation, transparency, and accountability. Nigerians must remain vigilant and committed to preserving a multi-party democratic structure.”

HURPA also urged the ruling party to demonstrate true democratic leadership by fostering an inclusive political environment where opposition parties can operate freely without intimidation or undue pressure. According to the group, a vibrant opposition is essential for policy scrutiny, national balance, and good governance.

“The ruling party must rise above partisan dominance and actively encourage a multi-party system. This is not just a political obligation but a democratic necessity that ensures the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” HURPA stated.

In addition, the association raised concerns over the role of the judiciary in sustaining democracy. It called on judges across the country to deliver judgments that are clear, precise, and free from ambiguity, particularly in politically sensitive cases.

“The judiciary remains the last hope of the common man. Ambiguous or contradictory rulings not only erode public trust but also create room for political manipulation and instability,” the statement continued. “We urge judicial officers to uphold the highest standards of clarity, fairness, and constitutional integrity in their decisions.”

HURPA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting human rights, rule of law, and democratic values across Nigeria. The organization also called on civil society groups, the media, and citizens to remain actively engaged in safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

“As a nation, we must collectively defend our democratic institutions. The future of Nigeria depends on a system that guarantees freedom, justice, and equal political participation for all,” HURPA concluded.
