Kwale – The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has strongly condemned the alleged invasion, intimidation, threats to life, and obstruction of business activities at the pure water production facility of Eloson Technology Limited in Kwale, Delta State.

According to HURPA, the organization received a copy of a petition submitted by the management of Eloson Technology Limited alleging that members of the Kwale Pure Water Union stormed the company's facility and threatened its staff and management for refusing to join the union.

The petition alleged that the group attempted to compel the company to become a member of the union and insisted that the union had the authority to determine the selling price of sachet water within the Kwale community.

Reacting to the development, HURPA described the alleged actions as unacceptable, unlawful, and contrary to the principles of freedom of association guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"The right to freedom of association includes the freedom to join or refuse to join any association, union, or group. No individual, organization, or union has the legal authority to force a private company to become a member against its will," HURPA stated.

The human rights organization further expressed concern over reports that workers and management personnel were allegedly threatened with words like " We will do you strong thing", noting that such actions could create an atmosphere of fear, discourage investment, and negatively affect economic activities within the community.

HURPA emphasized that while trade associations and unions have the right to pursue their legitimate objectives, such rights must be exercised within the boundaries of the law and without resorting to intimidation, coercion, or threats.

The organization called on relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the allegations contained in the petition and ensure that all parties operate within the framework of the law.

"HURPA believes that every lawful business entity deserves protection from harassment, threats, and unlawful interference. Disputes relating to trade practices or business operations should be resolved through dialogue and lawful channels rather than intimidation or force," the statement added.

The association also urged community leaders, stakeholders, and business groups in Kwale to promote peaceful coexistence and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
