The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has expressed deep concern over the deplorable state of the Abala Obodo Road in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, describing the condition of the road as a serious violation of the fundamental rights of the people who depend on it for their daily activities.

HURPA calls on the Executive Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Council and the Executive Governor of Delta State to urgently intervene by rehabilitating the road, which has become almost impassable due to years of neglect.

The association notes that residents of Abala Obodo and neighbouring communities continue to endure untold hardship as a result of the failed road infrastructure. Farmers, traders, students, civil servants, patients, and other road users are forced to navigate dangerous and muddy sections daily, especially during the rainy season. This has severely affected economic activities, access to healthcare, education, and other essential public services.

According to HURPA, access to good roads is closely linked to the enjoyment of several fundamental human rights, including the rights to life, health, education, movement, dignity, and sustainable livelihood. When communities are cut off due to poor infrastructure, citizens are effectively denied equal access to opportunities and essential government services.

The association further observed that the poor condition of the road has discouraged investment, increased transportation costs, damaged vehicles, delayed emergency medical responses, and exposed residents to avoidable risks. The continued neglect of the road has left many residents feeling abandoned despite their contributions to the development of the state.

HURPA therefore respectfully appeals to the Governor of Delta State to prioritize the reconstruction of the Abala Obodo Road as part of the state's commitment to rural development and inclusive governance. The association also urges the Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government to work closely with relevant state agencies to ensure that immediate palliative measures are undertaken while plans for permanent reconstruction are put in place.

The association believes that improving the road network will stimulate economic growth, enhance agricultural productivity, improve access to schools and healthcare facilities, and restore confidence in government among the people of Abala Obodo and surrounding communities.

HURPA reiterates that infrastructure development is not merely a matter of convenience but a fundamental component of protecting human rights and promoting social justice. The association remains committed to advocating for the welfare, dignity, and rights of all citizens and urges the government to act swiftly before the situation results in further hardship or avoidable loss of lives.
