Dangote Refinery Exports First Petrol Shipment to the United States

The Dangote Refinery has successfully exported its first petrol shipment to the United States, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s refining and export capabilities.

Sources at the refinery told TheCable that the vessel carrying the cargo left the refinery for the US about two weeks ago. According to vessel tracking platform MyShipTracking, the shipment aboard the tanker Gemini Pearl arrived in New York on Monday, as indicated by the vessel’s automatic identification system (AIS).

Reuters reported that the international oil trader Vitol and North American fuel distributor Sunoco took delivery of the first US import of petrol from the refinery. The tanker discharged the cargo at Sunoco’s Linden terminal in New York Harbor.

The cargo, comprising about 320,000 barrels of petrol, was purchased by Vitol from Mocoh Oil, a Switzerland-based company, with most of it sold to Sunoco. However, the exact volume retained by Vitol versus sold to Sunoco has not been disclosed.

Reuters also reported that a second petrol shipment from the Dangote Refinery, sold by Glencore to Shell aboard the vessel MH Daisen, is expected to arrive in New York Harbor around September 19. A third shipment, purchased by Vitol from Mocoh and transported on the vessel Seaexplorer, is scheduled to reach the harbor around September 22.

The exports underscore the Dangote Refinery’s growing role in supplying refined petroleum products to international markets and represent a strategic step in boosting Nigeria’s position in the global energy sector.
