The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a request by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) seeking to halt the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest organised by rights activist, Omoyele Sowore.

The demonstration, scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, is aimed at demanding the immediate release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

According to reports, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, had directed police lawyers to approach the court with an ex parte motion — a one-sided legal request — to stop Sowore and his group from marching to the Aso Rock Villa, the seat of Nigeria’s presidency.

However, Justice Umar of the Federal High Court declined to grant the police request, insisting that the principles of fair hearing must be upheld. The judge ordered that Sowore be properly served with the notice of the police application and adjourned the matter to Tuesday for a full hearing.

In his reaction, Sowore welcomed the ruling, describing it as “a victory for civil liberties and democratic rights.” He vowed that the protest would go on as planned, reaffirming the group’s commitment to peaceful demonstration and the demand for justice.

The decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over freedom of expression and the right to peaceful protest in Nigeria, especially in cases involving political dissent and human rights.

The “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest is expected to draw activists, civil society groups, and sympathizers from across the country as they push for Kanu’s release from detention.
