Chelsea bounced back in emphatic fashion on Friday night, securing their first win of the new Premier League season with a resounding 5-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium.
The Blues, who were frustrated in a goalless draw with Crystal Palace in their opening fixture, stormed back with a statement performance. The night also marked history for teenage sensation Estêvão, who at just 18 years and 120 days old, became the youngest Chelsea player ever to provide an assist in Premier League history, setting up Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea’s third goal.
West Ham made the perfect start when Lucas Paquetá put them ahead in the 6th minute with a stunning strike from range. But Chelsea quickly responded, with Joao Pedro heading in the equaliser on 15 minutes before Pedro Neto (23rd) and Fernandez (34th) struck to give Mauricio Pochettino’s men a commanding 3-1 lead at halftime.
The second half brought more misery for West Ham’s new goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, whose debut turned sour after two costly errors from corners. Moises Caicedo pounced in the 54th minute before Trevoh Chalobah added the fifth just four minutes later, sealing a comfortable win for the visitors.
For West Ham boss Graham Potter, the pressure is already mounting. After last week’s 3-0 defeat at Sunderland, his side have now conceded eight goals in their opening two games—the most ever by the Hammers in the top-flight at this stage of a season.
The result leaves Chelsea temporarily at the top of the table with four points, while West Ham sit rock bottom with no points to show from their opening fixtures.
