The political tension in Rivers State deepened on Tuesday as the Rivers State House of Assembly formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

During plenary, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Major Jack, read before members a notice of gross misconduct allegedly committed by the governor. The notice contains several accusations which lawmakers say amount to constitutional violations and abuse of power.

Among the allegations listed against Governor Fubara are the controversial demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, extra-budgetary spending without legislative approval, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to comply with the Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for state legislatures.

The move signals a fresh escalation in the political crisis that has lingered in the state, following months of face-off between the executive and the legislature.

Although details of the impeachment timeline are yet to be made public, the presentation of charges marks the first formal step in the constitutional impeachment process. Lawmakers are expected to proceed with investigations and hearings in line with legislative procedures.
