Obasanjo Slams Judiciary, INEC: “Courts of Corruption, Not Justice”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has fired a blistering attack on Nigeria’s judiciary and electoral system in his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future.

Obasanjo claims that corruption among judges has turned courts into “a court of corruption rather than a court of justice.” He warns that the integrity of the judiciary has plunged dramatically, especially in the Fourth Republic.

In a revealing anecdote, Obasanjo says a governor showed him six duplexes owned by a judge allegedly acquired through election tribunal money—an illustration of what he calls the “depth of corruption” in the judiciary.

He also targeted INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, accusing him of undermining elections since 2015 and making his will more important than the people’s.

Obasanjo further alleged that former President Muhammadu Buhari colluded with judges, rewarding them with appointments regardless of age or rank to influence election outcomes.

“After false declarations of results, making losers winners and winners losers, the victim of cheating is advised to go to a court of corruption rather than a court of justice,” he wrote.

The book’s revelations are expected to spark nationwide debate on judicial accountability and electoral reforms, ahead of the 2027 polls.
