Lifting Fubara’s Suspension Not Worth Celebrating - Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the lifting of the suspension on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and members of the State House of Assembly as “nothing to cheer about,” insisting that the suspension itself was unconstitutional from the onset.

Atiku, in a statement on Wednesday, faulted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for overstepping his constitutional bounds, stressing that no section of the 1999 Constitution grants the president powers to suspend a democratically elected governor or lawmakers.

“The suspension of Governor Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was announced six months ago, and it remains illegal today. President Tinubu had no power to carry out such an action,” Atiku declared.

The former Vice President argued that the political crisis in Rivers State and the federal government’s handling of it expose what he termed the “dictatorship tendencies” of the current administration.

“The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration,” Atiku said, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending democratic institutions.

The Rivers political crisis, which broke out late last year, saw the state’s governor and lawmakers entangled in a power tussle that drew in the presidency. While the latest move seeks to restore normalcy, Atiku’s reaction suggests the controversy is far from over.
