Kidney Patients Get Relief as FG Cuts Dialysis Cost to ₦12,000

In a move aimed at easing the financial burden of Nigerians battling kidney disease, the Federal Government has announced that dialysis sessions will now cost ₦12,000 in selected federal hospitals across the country.

The intervention, courtesy of the health sector reforms policy of President Bola Tinubu, is expected to bring relief to thousands of patients who often struggle to afford life-saving dialysis treatments, which previously cost between ₦25,000 and ₦40,000 per session in many hospitals.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the programme has taken off in 10 federal hospitals and teaching hospitals nationwide:

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja
University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri
University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta
Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin
University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

The government noted that this is only the first phase of the initiative, with more Federal Medical Centres and teaching hospitals expected to be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.

Kidney disease has been on the rise in Nigeria, with many patients unable to keep up with the high cost of dialysis, which is often required two to three times weekly. The subsidy is therefore seen as a critical step in improving healthcare accessibility and reducing preventable deaths.

Stakeholders in the health sector have commended the policy, describing it as a lifeline for vulnerable Nigerians who can now access treatment at a more affordable rate.
