Court Sacks Abure, Affirms End of Tenure as Labour Party Chairman

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Julius Abure against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), affirming that he is no longer the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

In Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025, the Court struck out Abure’s case for want of jurisdiction, aligning with the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025, ruling that nullified all prior recognitions of his leadership.

INEC, in its counter-affidavit, confirmed that Abure’s tenure, alongside that of the National Executive Committee, ended in June 2024.
Reacting to the judgment, Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, PhD, described the ruling as a clear and final closure to the leadership tussle.

“This is another unambiguous affirmation of the rule of law and the Supreme Court’s binding pronouncements. The chapter is closed — we must put distractions behind us and rebuild the Labour Party into the disciplined, people-centred movement Nigerians deserve,” Usman stated.

She also commended INEC for its “clarity, courage, and institutional integrity” in presenting the facts and urged members of the party to respect the Constitution and the authority of the courts.

The ruling is expected to put an end to the internal factional battles that have plagued the party for over a year, as preparations intensify for upcoming by-elections and the 2027 general elections.
